Los Alamitos quarterback Malachi Nelson and wide receiver Makai Lemon combined for 535 yards to help the Griffins improve to 2-2 with a 47-14 win over Servite on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Running back Damian Henderson led the ground game with 202 yards and three touchdowns. USC commit Nelson finished 13 of 21 for 306 yards and four touchdowns.
“Our guys settled down,” Los Alamitos head coach Ray Benton said. “We started to play more as a team than we have the last couple weeks. Individually we are extremely talented.What we haven’t been doing is playing together. Tonight we played together.”
Nelson gave the Griffins a 7-0 lead in the second quarter with a 76-yard touchdown pass to Lemon. After a Servite turnover, Nelson hit Gavin Porch on a screen pass and Porch made a couple defenders miss on his way to a 15-yard touchdown.
In the final seconds of the first half, Nelson threw his third touchdown to Andrew Dubios, who out jumped the cornerback for a 25-yard touchdown and a 20-0 lead.
Los Alamitos opened the third quarter with Henderson’s 66-yard touchdown run to extend the lead 27-0. Servite got on the board with a 1-yard run from Quaid Carr with 7:00 minutes left in the third quarter.
Nelson got behind the defense to haul in a 69-yard touchdown and Los Alamitos took a 34-7 lead in the third quarter. Henderson scored his second and third touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
