Huntington Beach Oilers VS Edison Chargers

Oilers can't keep up with Chargers in Sunset finale

Edison senior running back Troy Fletcher rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns in a dominating 41-6 win over Huntington Beach on Friday night at Sheue Field. The Chargers finished the season 7-3 overall and 4-1 in Sunset League play.

“It’s a really good win,” Edison head coach Jeff Grady said. “Huntington is a good football team. Defensively we came out and played really well and offensively we did a lot of good things too.”

The Chargers will await their playoff fate. The CIF-SS football playoff divisions and pairings will be released Sunday at 10 a.m.

Both teams traded interceptions in a scoreless first quarter. On the opening drive, Edison quarterback Awad Parker threw a 37-yard pass but was intercepted by Quincy Hankins.

On the ensuing drive, Huntington Beach was driving down the field before AJ Perez threw a red-zone interception to Cody Grbic.

Edison got on the board in the second quarter when Fletcher took the handoff and raced to the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown.

After the Edison defense forced a punt, Parker hit Jackson Irwin for a 22-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead over the Oilers. The Chargers took a 21-0 lead into halftime on Fletcher’s second touchdown of the game.

“We executed but we still had little mistakes we have to fix for the playoffs,” Fletcher said. “I just tried to fill my role and do anything I can to help the team.”

The Chargers opened the third quarter with a pick six. Edison middle linebacker Peyton Gregory intercepted Perez and broke multiple tackles on his way to the end zone for a commanding 28-0 lead.

Perez threw his third interception of the game on the next drive. Grbic’s interception set up the Chargers at the Oilers 35-yard line. It took Edison four plays to score as Parker found Tyler Hampton in the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown and a 34-0 lead.

Backup quarterback Tyler Gioia added a touchdown pass to Dominic Lopez to give Edison a 41-0 lead with 3:23 left in the third quarter. Huntington Beach avoided the shutout when Perez found Caleb Kelly for a 35-yard touchdown.
