Can’t Miss Games:
Thursday, October 13th, 2022 vs. Los Alamitos In what could potentially be the game to determine the Sunset League champion for 2022, the Chargers will slug it out with the Griffins. This will be one of the best Football games in Orange County and all of Southern California this season. Mark the date on your calendar, as this is going to be one game that you definitely don’t want to miss.Outlook:
The Chargers finished second in league last year with a 4-1 record. With many quality returners and some key additions to the 2022 squad, the Chargers are poised to make a run at the Sunset League title this season. A challenging pre-season schedule that includes Orange Luthern of the Trinity League, and South County powerhouse San Clemente, should prepare Edison for the gauntlet that is the Sunset League. The Chargers will rely on their high powered offense and stout defense to get them the league title they covet, while enabling them to not only get into the CIF playoffs, but make a significant run that could result in a CIF championship for Edison.Offense:
The Chargers return six starters on offense from last year’s squad. The familiarity that the returners have with the offense will work to the advantage of the Chargers. There will be multiple offensive schemes that the Chargers will employ, which will be contingent upon the type of defense they are facing. The ability to run various offensive concepts gives the Chargers the upper hand when combating different defensive fronts and alignments. Senior Parker Awad returns as the starting Quarterback in 2022, and with a bevy of talented offensive players by his side, he will be an effective leader for the Edison Offensive attack. Tucker Tripp, Malachi Pierce, Ty Bankaruk and Jackson Irwin are returning Wide Receivers, giving Awad numerous weapons in the passing game. Ashton Hurley and Mason York will also make contributions on the offensive side of the ball. Defensive standouts Carter Houge and Jared Schnoor will look to make an impact in the Chargers rushing attack as they both take snaps at running back in their senior and junior season, respectively. Of course every successful offense starts with protection up front, and the Chargers have a talented offensive line that is anchored by senior Zachary Gruwell. The offensive line was a strong point for the Chargers in 2021, and despite working in a number of new starters in 2022, they will need a similar showing from this group in 2022 to allow Awad and the offense to find their rhythm. Logan Shill, a junior lineman, will also be a stalwart player on a line that will be instrumental in enabling the Chargers to put up a multitude of points this season.Defense:
Edison will most likely play a 4-3 defense this year, with mixed coverages in the secondary. They return five starters from the 2021 defensive squad. Cole Truelove, a senior Defensive Lineman, should be very disruptive to opposing offenses. He can get to the Quarterback quickly, causing chaos and timing issues for the signal caller. Truelove should be a sack machine this year, although there will be times when he will have to fight through double team blocking. He will be an effective run stopper, which will limit what other offenses can do against Edison. Jake Giles will bolster an already skilled Defensive Line. The junior has great instincts and the ability to quickly recognize what an offense is doing, therefore giving him opportunities to make big plays. Logan Gregory is a great tackler who will be one of the leaders of the Linebackers. Dom Lopez and Dylan Walters will see a lot of playing time for the Chargers at Linebacker. Lopez, who will pretty much never leave the field, is a high energy player who can hit, and hit hard when given the opportunity, while Walters will give the Chargers some extra punch to an already aggressive and fast Linebacker assembly. The secondary patrol will consist of Jared Schnoor, Malachi Pierce, Carter Houge and Jackson Irwin. Irwin can fly to the ball and meet Wide Receivers with tremendous hitting ability. He will cause many opponents to cough up the ball this season. Malachi Pierce will be good in recognizing pass routes, thus helping him to neutralize the various passing game concepts the Chargers will see this year. Schnoor and Houge will shore up the rest of the secondary, making Edison one tough group of Defensive Backs to throw against with any success. The Chargers defensive unit will be highly effective this season, as well as very entertaining to watch play.Special Teams:
The reigning Sunset League Kicker of the Year award recipient is back to resume his kicking duties for the Chargers. In a league that is loaded with great kickers, you have to be extremely talented to win the aforementioned honor. Nicholas Preston has great range, and can hit field goals from distances that most high school kickers can not. Putting kickoffs into the end zone will also help the Chargers in the game within the game, which of course is the fight for field position. Having Preston at Kicker gives the Chargers an additional scorer who will manufacture many points with his foot this season.Additional Information about the Edison High School Football Program:
